There weather here has been horrible for the last week and half and this week started out with temps below zero and snow predicted for tomorrow. I'm so ready for it to be warmer and not so depressing outside. On the upside Flying Sheep (one of my LYS's) was having a huge remodeling sale when I stopped in on Friday so I picked up some Brown Sheep Bulky for a Jayne hat, and two balls of elsebeth lavold Chunky AL (50% Alpaca 50% Wool 82 yds per 50g) one in a burnt orange called Maple Leaf and one in a brown with hints of orange called Bramble. I also picked up some e.l. Silky Wool for a hat that I'm making for a friend in a charcoal gray. I'll post pictures and other details when I wake up... right now, the one degree temps have sucked out my energy and I'm going to go curl up in my bed.

This week has been a return to a semi normal schedule. I was still working a little bit more than I really would have preferred but I am not really complaining because in today’s job market I am truly fortunate to have two jobs while there are those out there would be overjoyed with one. There may be an upcoming change on the job front but I’m not going to go into that right now (don’t want to jinx anything!).

I finished the first Highland sock the other night watching Project Runway. I don't think I'm going to get too stuck with second sock syndrome on these, because I love the STR that much. I've already cast on the second sock and I just started the heel flap. I don't have my camera with me but as soon as I can I will get pictures of the progress. I also had total startitis the other night. I cast on for Knitty's Eiffel with "Hemp Wool" that was in the stash. The pattern calls for 100% hemp but this is a 50/50 blend. I don't know who makes it because it isn't really well marked and I got it off of ebay. But it is a really pretty sage green color and I think this will make a really nice early summer tunic with a little cami under it. I'm about 4 inches in already as it is a really easy lace pattern. This will be my first sweater completely in the round which excites me because finishing is definitely not one of my fav things in the world. So between these two projects I'm pretty much being faithful right now. The kilt socks for DW are still in the queue because I have yet to procure yarn for them yet. I just got my Christmas present from my Grandma the other night and it was a gift certificate to Knitpicks.com so I'll be getting that yarn in the not too distant future.

Well, gotta go, my phone is ringing and I'm off to do stuff with people.

I got my first date night in a while tonight. I went and saw Malinky at The Ark in Ann Arbor. It was a really, really good show and I'm so glad that we got tickets. There were not as many people there as I thought there were going to be, which is both good and bad. It was good because we got really great seats and we got to chat for a bit with the band during the break without feeling like we were hogging all of their time. But it kind of sucked because I though that they were going to get a much bigger turnout than they did. All things considered though it was a great show, and it is their first tour in the States so I think that when they come back to the area the turnout will be much bigger. I already had all three of the band's albums so I got the solo album put out by Steve Byrne, one of the founding members of Malinky. I also got one of their bumper stickers that I had the whole band sign (because I wasn't about to buy a repeat CD just so that I could have them sign it). All in all it was a really good night!

In the land of knitting I got a fair bit done in the car to and from Wisconsin this past weekend. I finished the Palindrome scarf for my cousin's Christmas present. I am so glad that I am done with this freaking scarf. The pattern is really great and I'm going to use it again, but I made the mistake of using black yarn. It took so much concentration to make sure that I wasn't losing stitches that it was just a headache to knit. But I finally finished it and my cousin absolutely loved it. She's going to school at De Paul University in Chicago and so she needs all the warm knitted things she can get. After I recover from the scarf I'm going to knit her the matching hat, but she might not get that in time for this year's cold weather.

I also made some progress on a pair of socks for myself. It's a straight stockinette pair of socks made with Blue Moon STR medium weight in Scottish Highlands. Cast on 64 sts, 2x2 ribbed cuff, short leg heel flap & gusset. This is the first time I've used STR and I'm totally a convert. Next year for my birthday I'm going to to be hard pressed to choose between a Sock Club membership and paying for my car insurance.

Michigan has not been the picturesque white wonderland that I remember from my childhood the last couple of years. So this year in protest I didn't go with the "traditional" Christmas tree. I got it at The Rocket in downtown Ypsilanti. I just took my tree down yesterday but I had to post because it was just too cute :) Had to put it up high this year though because Miss Edie thought it was shiny and reallly wanted to play with it. I'll go through a whole re-cap of the christmas fun, but it's off to work for me. Have a great week!

I know, I know there are those of you out there who are saying "Wait a minute, we don't hear anything from her for over a month and all she can talk about is the new Knitty!" I'm sorry!! The holidays were a little busy around here... even the cat has taken to sleeping most of the day trying to recover (ok, not really a departure from normal but it sounds good). I had a really really great Christmas and got a couple of really great things that are going to make my life a much happier place to be. I'll totally go into that as soon as I sleep for about a month. But I totally found my first project for the new year! Aislinn L. Charlton-Dennis' Toirneach Kilt Hose. I'm not totally crazy about the lace pattern that she used for the cuff of them but it's something that I can totally change. I think they're going to be in Knit Pick's Swish Superwash in Marine Heather as it will coordinate with DW's Irvine kilt, which he's planning on wearing at the wedding. I'm hoping that I can have some faithfulness to these so that he can wear them for the wedding, because it would be really cool to have something that I made him be a part of his outfit for our wedding. Ok, I think I need to get off my butt and head to work now, TTYL!!

Meet Edinburgh. She's cute, energetic, and gods help you if you get between her and her fish on a pole. She's also the vast majority of the reason that I haven't been updating here for a while because all of my spare moments have been spent fawning over her and telling her how cute she is.

My semester is started and my classes are going pretty well so far. I kind of wish that my Sociology class was run a little bit differently but it's mostly a difference with the professors style of teaching and not the class itself. Other than that, and a person in my World Lit class who I just want to knock unconscious for their own good, the semester is going well.

More later though, got to go work for a living!

So DW and I have a new job, we are delivering papers for the Detroit News Partnership which is primarily the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News, but we also deliver the New York Times, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. My workday starts at about 1:30 in the morning and I'm done at about 5:30 am. As jobs go it's actually not that bad. The only drawback is that we are independent contractors so we have to find our own people to cover if we want to take a vacation or a day off, as the job is 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Hopefully that won't be too much of a problem. But the reason that this inspires feelings of scum is that the person who had the route before us (and had for the last 17 years) got cancer and was no longer able to work... Generally this isn't too much of an issue because there aren't many of our customers awake and around at 4 in the morning, but this Sunday (when we finish around 8am) I ran into one of our customers as I was delivering her paper. She asked if I was her new carrier and I said yes and it turns out she had developed a friendship with the previous carrier, but hadn't heard that she was quitting or about the cancer. So it was very hard to explain that the woman (who I had never met) had cancer and I was the new carrier on the route without feeling like I was the most horrible person in the world. *sigh*

Ok, so regular knitting content will totally be up soon! I promise! With all the moving and everything else I have managed to lose my camera in a box somewhere and so as soon as I find it I will totally post knit related stuff... I've got a pair of socks, a surprise FO, an all but finished twin baby blanket and a number of other works in progress (I'm a horrible case of project ADD) to show you! Be back soon!

So for the last four years the highlight of my summer has been going to a new, fun big city somewhere in the US for General Assembly. The past two years I was even more privelaged to be able to go as staff for the Young Adult Caucus which specifically deals with ministry to young adults and college aged persons between the ages of 18 and 35. It's a great conference and a wonderful chance to renew relationships with colleges from across the country, find new tips and techniques for working with young adult/campus ministry groups, and genreally have a good time. But I won't be going this year because I have other things to do!

Highlighted in red is the front of my lovely new apartment! It's a one bedroom overlooking downtown. This is the first time that I've really been an urban dweller and so far I'm totally psyched! We are on the same block as our coffee shop, two blocks from the amazing new Dos Hermanos market, 4 blocks from the Food Co-op, and generally realy easy walks to all the basics that I could want. So, posting might be a little sporadic for a while as I'm not sure what I'm doing for internet at the new place yet. Off to do the happy dance!!!!

Today I got to be around for most of life's major transitions. Today was the memorial services for a friend's father, who passed away unexpectedly after a short hospitalization. While I did not attend the service I was still there in spirit supporting my friend and his family. DW did attend the service, partially because he does better with the funeral/memorial service thing than I do (mostly due to the fact that he used to do a great number of funerals as a bagpiper).

Then when he got home from the memorial service he asked me, "So, what are you wearing to Michael and Ericka's wedding?" Now, don't get me wrong, I love weddings - but I had not intended on going to this wedding, mostly because I had never received an invitation. These are friends that I see every week, and I had been around when they talked about the wedding plans, helped be a shoulder to cry on when the emotional turmoil of graduation followed immediately by a wedding, but I had never been expressly invited and I didn't receive a written notice or invitation of any kind. As I found out from DW and from others, the bride and groom didn't send out invitations or expressly invite anyone from the group of us that meets on a weekly basis - they had simply assumed that we knew we were welcome. Once again, remember that I consider these to be some of my good friends, however, I was raised by a mother and a grandmother who believed that even if every other person ignored it, etiquette was still relevant in the 21st century. Anyways... small rant aside I ran around finding an outfit that was suitable for going to a wedding, realized that I didn't have any shoes that went with that outfit, or with that color family. So I went to Payless and got these:

And let me tell you, I felt so fab in these shoes. I don't normally wear heels... never been my thing for more then about an hour, but these were great! So I felt great, the bride and groom looked great, and the ceremony was lovely. After that we went to the reception, which was set up as a summer barbecue with all kinds of sausages, potato salad, corn etc. Got to see a number of people that I hadn't really seen since the end of High School which was cool, including a friend who was 9 months pregnant and was technically due the next day! That's about when I realized how much I had lost touch with some people, as I hadn't even know that that friend was pregnant!! But all in all the wedding was awesome and I'm really glad that I "crashed".

The end of my day was spent with the youth group at the First UU Congregation of Ann Arbor. I was there representing the Campus Ministry that is sponsored by the congregation at the youth group's Bridging Ceremony. The ceremony marks the graduation of members from high school and many times, their imminent departure for colleges out of town. This year they were also welcoming in the transitioning 8th graders who would be joining the youth group as 9th graders, as well as bidding farewell to one of the advisors who is stepping down, and the new advisor who is taking their place. All in all it was a very nice ceremony and I was glad I was able to help.

Well, I've had enough fun and transitions today. Off to get some sleep and get ready for work tomorrow, bleh - sometimes I hate being an adult....

This weekend was the Alma Highland Games in Alma, MI (aka Scotland USA). The weather forecast was calling for rain and storms all weekend, but fortunately the forecasters were pretty much totally wrong! It rained a bit on Saturday morning and then was mostly clear the rest of the day. And Sunday rained for about an hour in the morning and then cleared up completely and was 80, sunny, and windy the rest of the day. The wind did really interesting things for the caber toss. That's what the picture above is from. The goal of the caber toss is to flip the caber (wooden pole) end over end so that the end that you were originally holding on to falls away from you.

Alma Highland Games are also a competition site for the MidWest Pipe Band Association. So there were a number of bands from around the Michigan and Midwest region that came to compete, including http://the Ann Arbor Pipes and Drums which is the band that DW helped to found and played with for many years. Flint Scottish Pipe Band was also there (had to give some text space to my hometown pipers) and they were one of the biggest bands there and looked and sounded great. Rounding out the bands that I know people in was the Grand Traverse Pipes & Drums. My friend Traci plays swing tenor (it's one of the supporting tenor drums that involves a lot of flashy stick flourishes more then actual playing, but besides the bagpipes themselves it's one of the harder positions to do well because you have to time the flourishes with the music and still beat your notes in time with the rest of the section). She actually technically plays with Superior Pipes & Drums, who are based out of Marquette, MI but they were competing with Grand Traverse this year as they were less than a year old and are still a very small group. GTP&D had some problems the first day of competition but sounded much better the second day. Each day of competition ends with Massed Bands where awards for the day are given out and all of the bands combine to play a number (usually Amazing Grace) and if you have never heard 100 pipers and 75 drummers play all at once it is defiantly something to witness at least once in your lifetime.

In addition to all of the music and athletic competitions there are any number of vendors and displays about Scottish heritage and life. This includes the awe inspiring Highland Cattle farm that brings some of their beautiful animals to show at the Highland Festival. They are pretty resilient animals and they produce a lean, well-marbled beef because they can rely on the thick hair to keep them warm instead of excess fat. (Plus, they're really fun to pet!)

So that was my fun filled Memorial Day weekend! I have to be up and at work at 8am tomorrow (so not fair, having to work on Memorial Day) so I'm going to go and try to get some sleep. Hope that everyone has a safe and happy Memorial Day celebration!!

This weekend was the Circle of Art auction. Its a charity benefit for the Food Gatherers of Washtenaw County, hosted by the Saline Picture Frame Co. My anut and uncle, who own the frame shop, did a really great job with the set up this year. They ended up with a total of 474 pieces of art this year which totally filled the entire shop. They rented a tent and put it up in the parking lot and served refreshments and hor dourves outdoors. It was a wonderfully run event and at 5pm bidding closed and then guests were invited to go outside for a champagne toast and chocolate-covered strawberries. Luckily the day was georgeous and so there was no argument about going outside. When all of the bids were tallied and all was said and done the event raised over $18,000 and collected a whole bunch of canned goods that were part of the raffle. It was a great afternoon and a wonderful time was had by all. If you are in the Ann Arbor area next year you should totally consider donating a piece. The auction tends to be heavy on the print/painting art pieces but the fiber/dimensional art pieces have made themselves proud the last 2 years. Go check it out!
